Why aren't Book of Mormon populations Jewish?

If I recall correctly the groups described as going and setting up in the Americas were Jewish when they set of but weren't Jewish when they got there.
(based on the Book of Mormon text).

What happened?

For example:

Ether 9:18 wrote:
And also all manner of cattle, of oxen, and cows, and of sheep, and of swine, and of goats, and also many other kinds of animals which were useful for the food of man.

Swine — Bible Dictionary wrote:
Swine. Always spoken of in the O.T. and N.T. with horror and disgust (Isa. 66:3, 17; Prov. 11:22; 2 Pet. 2:22). The pig was regarded as the type of all unclean beasts. Its flesh was forbidden as food (Lev. 11:7; Deut. 14:8).

Edited to add:
This would fit to "Picnic" thread, too.

You can't expect Joseph Smith to think of EVERYTHING.

Wow, you people really don't have a clue about the Book of Mormon. Ether 9:18 is about the JAREDITES. The Jaredites were not part of the house of Israel.

Why would the population have to be Jewish?

Actually, Nephi would not have had access to the priesthood. He was not a Levite. He wouldn't have had any right to build a temple that did any of the sacrifices or anything like that.

Stupid PH bans ruin everything.

Because the Book of Mormon says there was no one else there, and the Jaredites were destroyed. Also the Book of Mormon and church doctrine indicate Noah's flood was global, so everyone who would have been there would have died.

Precisely. Let's see those anti-mormon critics try and prove they were not in fact Hotentots. Of course those pesky critics would want to drag in failure to mention desired grub worms and mole meat. Can't win with them sometimes.

Good point. At least a Mormon picnic can have some BBQ spareribs.
