Roger,
I remember watching a Michael Palin travel programme called 'Himalaya' about his...well...his travels through Himalaya.
One town he visited had a large walled-off area, a sort of town within a town complex. When lady time arrived, the woman was shipped off to the walled off sanctum for the period of her...well...her period, along with any dependant children.

Leviticus 12 deals with impurity incurred from childbirth. Leviticus 15 deals with genital discharge impurities, both male and female. What you are looking for is probably there.

I wonder if somewhere there is a planet where it's squid-like creatures that have become sentient. Perhaps they have an archaic religion, with purity rules like:
Thou shalt not enter into the synagog if thou hast discharged thy ink sac in the same lunar cycle. Though shalt not enter until thou hast purified thyself before the decagon (decagon being the counsel of elder squids. Ten is their holy number, because they have 10 arms).
When thou art in the sanctuary, display not thy spermatophoric gland to thy brother. It is an abomination.

On the flip side, having some time off from the duties of life might actually be nice and welcomed. Gathering with other women and spending time with each other...
I could be down with that.

Leviticus 15 is the best source for the unclean discharges from both men and women...
but i have never heard of her being required to be "out of town".
usually people were taken to the city gate in order to be stoned to death....but also it was at the city gate where a woman's parents would bring proof to the Elders that the daughter was a virgin.

The impurity codes in Leviticus/Numbers specify different remedies for various states of impurity. Some of those do involve staying away from the main Israelite camp for specific periods of time. It's easy to get these confused. If this is something that interests you, I would recommend a good study Bible, such as the Oxford Annotated Bible. The footnotes in a good study Bible can help the reader keep all of the regulations straight. A good commentary can also help put the various regulations into a larger context.
