I thought that when you were on the Lords Errand you were entitled to His protection...

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was hit by a bus while serving in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In a statement, LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter said:

Elder Britten Steven Schenk, 20, from Hyde Park, Utah serving in the Brazil Sao Paulo East mission, was struck by a bus on 16 March 2012 while waiting on the sidewalk to cross the street. He underwent emergency neurosurgery to relieve the swelling of the brain. Elder Schenk’s parents have flown to Brazil to consult with doctors and to be with their son at this critical time. Our prayers are with him, his family and friends.

Schenk's family has been updating Elder Schenk's status and their parent's travels during their ordeal.

Elder Schenk's family started a blog to update friends and relatives. They wrote that local church leaders came to their home over the weekend to inform them that Britten had been hit by a bus, that he had severe head injuries and that "the outlook did not look good."

The family also blogged that Britten's doctors said he was in a medically-induced coma and on a breathing machine.

On Sunday, a family member blogged:

"He is still in very serious condition but the Doctors are encouraged from last night. They feel that there is hope for his future."

Another family blog said that doctor's initially gave Elder Schenk a "40% chance of survival."

I hope he recovers.

you are "entitled" but that does not necessarily mean you will receive it or that you will accept it.

I hope he recovers.

as do i, along with a hope for the wisdom from whatever the outcome.

So...this Elder brought the accident on himself because he chose not to accept the Lords help...Are you sure you want to go with that?

Typical explanations:

He wasn't following rules, so the Lord stopped protecting him

OR

He was so pure the Lord called him home so he could preach to the spirits in prison

If the commentary following the incident where some missionaries were mown down by a car whilst they were cycling is anything to go by - the party line is to talk about how the Lord blessed those that survived.

The fact that this thread is posted in the Celestial Forum prevents me from expressing my reaction to this sentiment. I hope you will use your imagination to conjure up an extremely graphic and vulgar expression.

yes, it is sorta akin to that, but as with many such comments, it is not accurate.
glad to see, at least, you have a grasp of one's ability to choose.
However, it should be noted that the when "gift" is present one has the ability to disregard the Spirit's promptings.
The illusory promise allows for the one making the promise to have the option of delivery/performance...we have no reason to believe that such promise was not fulfilled and the elder chose otherwise, or was in a position to not act upon it.
There is also the possibility that the elder was receiving less and less promptings due to a worthiness issue.
Again, covenants from the Lord are not illusory they are, in fact, absolute.
