Jonah and the Whale

Post by _aussieguy55 »

The Book of Jonah is a short interesting book in the Bible. Many critics make fun of the story of Jonah being swallowed by a large fish (whale). An article appearing in Salon examines the whaling stories in various archives. The conclusion is that it would not have been possible, especially since the whale had quite sharp teeth.

Which is easier; to have a whale swallow a prophet, or to heal a blind man, or to feed thousands with only a few loaves and fishes?

I can imagine next time Jesus in US, as he feeds thousands with only a few loaves and fishes...

Pure storyline and myth. Jesus didn't multiply bread and fish. It's a faith promoting story invented by the Christians in effort to collect tithes and maintain order in their new church they created.

Speaking of prophets: Mormon prophets don't do anything amazing and no special tricks in front of the people. They don't fortell events that would soon be verified nor do they perform miracles like you read about in the Bible. They put on business suits and use credit cards thanks to the tithes of the people.

The whole story of Jonah being swallowed up by a whale is a total lie -- nothing but myth. And Jesus himself also believed it! And to make matters worse, Jesus said you don't need to wash your hands before you eat. That's just filthy. I wonder if Jesus bathed and kept clean. He probably was a bit on the dirty side and stunk. I wouldn't have touched him. Gross.

Jonah is one of many stories in the Bible that we can stumble on if we wish. That is why it is there. I have yet to discover its deep meaning but I hope to one day. I have only read it a few dozen times.

It's there to instill fear in the hearts of people who lived back in the day. Fear God lest he destroys you by having you eaten by a whale. The whole thing is really sick. The God of the Bible is a monster. I really dislike his character.

We destroy our self by the things we do. Whether it is today or 3000 years ago. We can choose to do good or we can choose to do evil. We can choose to seek the real God or we can worship the creation in many forms. We can attempt to transcend this body of flesh or we can fall prey to every worldly desire. Just as Jonah had a trial so we all have a trial. We all choose what we hold dear. If we indeed run from God we will one day realize that we run in vain.

Greatness.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07
