John The Baptist

Post by _Drifting »

John the Baptist (Hebrew: יוחנן המטביל, Yoḥanan ha-mmaṭbil, Arabic: يحيى بن زكريا‎ Yahya ibn Zakariya[1], Aramaic: ܝܘܚܢܢ Yoḥanan, Greek: Ὁ Ἅγιος/Τίμιος Ἐνδοξος Προφήτης, Πρόδρομος καὶ Βαπτιστής Ἰωάννης Ho Hagios/Timios Endoxos, Profetes, Prodromos, kai Baptistes Ioannes)[2][3][4][5] (c. 6 BC – c. AD 30-36) was an itinerant preacher[6] and a major religious figure[7] mentioned in the Canonical gospels. He is described in the Gospel of Luke as a relative of Jesus[8] who led a movement of baptism at the Jordan River.[9] Some scholars maintain that he was influenced by the Essenes, who were semi-ascetic, expected an apocalypse, and practiced rituals corresponding strongly with baptism,[10] although there is no direct evidence to substantiate this.[11] John is regarded as a prophet in Christianity, Islam,[12] the Bahá'í Faith,[13] and Mandaeism.
Most biblical scholars agree that John baptized Jesus at "Bethany beyond the Jordan," by wading into the water with Jesus from the eastern bank.[14][15] John the Baptist is also mentioned by Jewish historian Josephus, in Aramaic Matthew, in Pseudo-Clementine, and in the Qur'an.[16] Accounts of John in the New Testament appear compatible with the account in Josephus.[17] There are no other historical accounts of John the Baptist from around the period of his lifetime.
John anticipated a messianic figure who would be greater than himself,[18] and, in the New Testament, Jesus is the one whose coming John foretold. Christians commonly refer to John as the precursor or forerunner of Jesus,[19] since John announces Jesus's coming. John is also identified with the prophet Elijah.[20] Jesus was probably a disciple of John [21] and some of Jesus's early followers had previously been followers of John.[20]

My question:
Where did John the Baptist get the necessary Priesthood authority the conduct baptisms?

He was supposedly ordained by the hands of an angel while yet in the womb.

"For he was baptized while he was yet in his childhood, and was ordained by the angel of God at the time he was eight days old unto this power, to overthrow the kingdom of the Jews, and to make straight the way of the Lord before the face of his people, to prepare them for the coming of the Lord, in whose hand is given all power."

No, I didn't miss it.
I just thought the scripture was clearly wrong as you have to be at least 12 years old to receive the AP and 18 years old to receive the MP.
How does a new born child accept the Priesthood? Could he talk? Was a nod of the head good enough? John the Baptist wasn't even old enough to be baptised when Joseph Smith claims he got the Priesthood.

Mormon doctrine teaches John was foreordained before the foundation of the world to receive the priesthood as were all men who receive the priesthood. So it doesn't really matter what the baby in the womb was thinking. It may just be assumed that the baby knew what was going on when the angel appeared to Elizabeth and place his hand on here stomach, we only can suppose.

Of course, the whole thing is a bunch of nonsense anyways. It's part of the story of beginning a new religion, Christianity.

Why ask why? Who cares. Go pour yourself a drink.

i am not convinced that you did not...after all you seemingly missed this i nverse 27:
"...to continue with the house of Aaron among the children of Israel until John, whom God raised up, being filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb."

You are otherwise distracted and attempting, yet again, THIS

You need not verbally concede at this point, your dismal failure to frame any real argument and position merits no concession. (yet once again)
