1. to prevent an accidental and unintended invasion of privacy
2. to prevent unnecessary lottery of opening and closing lockers to find an available one
3. to prevent someone from planting a Holman translation of the scriptures amongst your belongings, then calling the Temple president to alert your transgression.

and most importantly

4. to prevent apostates in the UK from gaining knowledge of the spiritual and righteous aspects of life.

The way it was explained to me was to maintain privacy and promote a feeling of security so that patrons could feel at ease. Basically, it keeps the honest people out. All it takes is one nasty bad apple going around digging through lockers stealing stuff. That would eventually happen and it would cause a real problem. Locks are neccessity. It's part of living in this world whether in the temple or without.

Same reason we do in other places. Not everyone is going to be honest regardless of religion or non religious. The need to have lockers that lock does not mean the LDS church is any worse then any other. In fact I would trust with my personal property a lot more Mormons then many other groups. I just also understand that not all LDS are honest for various reasons.

I get that.
It's just...well...dishonesty in the Temple seems to defeat the object of the Temple. If the person that stole Just Me's Dads wallet went on that day to do an endowment for a dead person does it count?
