I think this is true for all people not just Americans. The church is in a unique postion in that it gets it from both sides. I don't think there are many other religions that are in the same postion. Maybe Islam and Scientology.

Unlike race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. religious beliefs are a choice so I think it is fair game to be critical of the beliefs and to choose not to vote for someone based on their religious beliefs.

I don't envy the american voter. You can vote for someone the opposition calls a socialist and muslim or someone who declares himself to believe in getting wisdom by looking at stones in a hat.
