True Philosophical Defenses of Mormonism

"Some people see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not?"
- George Bernard Shaw

If two roads diverged in the Sacred Grove, one leading back to Palmyra and the other to a rather large rabbit hole, should we not take the path less traveled and lead the life less ordinary?

That's probably the best defense of Mormonism I've ever heard.

Another more tangible defense might be found in holding a Prayer Tournament each year at BYU and inviting Houston Baptist, Loyola Marymount, Brandeis, Valparaiso, Oral Roberts and Southern Methodist Universities to go head to head in a winner take all competition. Best to use the term "religious methodology", in place of philosophy, for this tournament to maintain a cordial working relationship with the BYU sponsor.

This list has left out MIT lest they show up with electro-magnetic prayer disruptors, utilizing germanium oxide semiconductors immersed in liquid nitrogen, to deconstruct the methodological underpinnings of fellow competitors prayer assumptions. The University of Utah could alway counter this move with Cold Fusion.

You could think of the golden plates being a bit like The Maltese Falcon.

The title card tells us:

Title Card: In 1539, the Knight Templars of Malta, paid tribute to Charles V of Spain, by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels ~~~~~ but pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to this day ~~~

However, the last lines tell us:

Detective Tom Polhaus: [picks up the falcon] Heavy. What is it?
Sam Spade: The, uh, stuff that dreams are made of.
Detective Tom Polhaus: Huh?

No matter what the Maltese Falcon was made of - it is still a good movie.

Perhaps that is because moksha has just described about the best defense of Mormonism that any rational individual could ever hope to come up with.

(A thread on electromagnetic prayer disrupters from MIT sounds like fun as well.)
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."

Proof of Prophecy

We Mormons believe that inspiration through new light and information can enter the world. Even as you read this, the Curiousity rover is beaming back new data streams from the surface of Mars.

Some ideas transition to other forms over time. Just consider the case of Gehenna, Hell, Outer Darkness and Newark, New Jersey just to name a few.

If Moksha ran for President I'd be down with that. Better than any of those penguins in Happy Feet.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

I suspect Moksha is 'Skipper' the lead penguin from the Madagascar movies... Oops, revealed in real life information...

"Pray to your personal god this hunk of junk flies."

"The best sacrifice is the one made by others. "

I hate to quote myself...
- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco
- To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei
