Who or what will be the source of this upcoming flood, and why hasn't he/she/it bothered to get it done before now?
I will just make a few comments. This subject is huge and runs throughout scripture.
The book of Daniel was written by Daniel around 550 BC. The prophecy contained in the book relate to the coming Christ and His second Coming. These were all future events and Daniel did not understand these prophecies and they troubled him.
Dan 12:8
And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? Dan 12:9
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Dan 12:10
Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. So a man who God loved was given the task of writing prophecy he could not understand. Yet we find out that in time the sealing will be removed. This sealing is just like the blindness that was placed on the Jews. It has a spiritual source so it can not be broken.
The prophecy of Daniel chapter 9 is in two parts. The first part deals with the coming Messiah. This is the 69 weeks of the 70 week prophecy. This 69 week prophecy places a definite time stamp to the day that Christ would ride into Jerusalem and announce that He was the Messiah. The Jews were held to know this day.
Luk 19:42
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. So the Jews were given the words yet they looked for a savior to conquer Rome not a Messiah that would take on the sins of the world and die. Yet the prophecy clearly states He would die.
Dan 9:26
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off,........Understanding the past will give us an understanding of the future. So now we are to know the rest of the prophecy dealing with the 70th week. People have been trying to figure it out for two thousand years. In fact the Preterist have taken the misunderstanding of the 70th week to an artform.
There is also some confusion as to the end times and latter days in scripture. The latter days are those days just before a scriptural event. So how can we know when the latter days of the end time event starts? Actually it is defined in scripture. Peter tells us so in 2Peter.
2 Peter 3
This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: This may be an illusion to the second Church and the remembrance of the present truth
That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, Here Peter is setting a date for the last days. For in those days scoffers will be saying the following.
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. This is a key verse for setting the date for the last days. This verse states that a belief will come along in which some people (scoffers) will believe that each day is like all days before it. And what we see today is the same as we go back in time. In science this is called uniformitarianism and it was popularized by Charles lyell. He wrote a book called Principles of Geology published Jan 1830. This sets the start date of the last days at Jan 1830. Also published Jan 1830 was the Book of Mormon. So the Book of Mormon was published at the start of the last days according to this prophecy. So Peter was telling us when his work (in death) would re-establish the present truth. (ref 2Peter 1)
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: The ideas of men (scoffers) in the form of scientific theories has taken many people away from the historical truth of scriptures. Once people accept that uniformitarianism is a guiding principle for them then they view the past through natural eyes. In this they deny the flood of Noah. In this they deny that God has performed miracles in the past and the earth has changed many times in supernatural ways. This has gotten so bad that many churches now accept the scientific view and then deny the flood of Noah.
You ask me to know the mind of God as to why He does things the way He does. Of course I do not know. But I am sure you can find many people who do say they know the mind of God. I have met many of them.
I have met some people who I believe actually can discern scripture. They have all told me that scripture is opening up. It would make sense then that indeed we are in the end times. But we have yet to experience the signs of the times which is yet another time stamp in the end times.
Luk 21:10
Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: Luk 21:11
And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. These are Biblical scale events which have not happened. They mark a 38 year period till the end.
This is a very chopped up answer to your questions. But to answer in some proper way would require a book.
