A Question for Chinese speaking members

I know the name of the Book of Mormon was changed in 2007 from "mo men" to "Mormon," and I understand that the original pronunciation could have some negative connotation, but I'm curious as to whether it was ever actually viewed negatively by any native Chinese speakers?
If any of you are Chinese, or served a mission in Hong Kong, or Taiwan prior to 2007, could you tell me if you ever recall anyone having a negative reaction to the original name?
Or was the whole name change an over-reaction to some English speaking critics who created something out of nothing?
