New Pope Frances from Argentina. Jana Riess says that this indicates the Catholic church will pay more attention to poverty alleviation.

Not necessarily because he is from Argentina. However, that is his record.

Hey, what do you think of the symbolism underlying the name Francis, taken from the St. Francis of Assisi?

The name Francis seems like the antithesis of the name Ezra Taft.

From a division deep within Catholicism, a Jesuit taking the name of the founder of the Franciscans has a lot of meaning.

Obviously not being RC the election of the new Pope is of only passing interest to me. I did note the selection of the name Francis after the individual who gave up great wealth to live a life of poverty ministering to the poor. It reminded me of a visit to Assisi in Italy and a huge contradiction I found there. The tiny, essentially one room church Francis ministered from is still there...covered by an enormous, opulent cathedral type building that seemed to me to proclaim everything Francis was not about.

I think St. Francis of Assisi is the first name that comes to mind. However! Let's not forget the Jesuit St. Francis X-avier (the auto censor doesn't like the name Xavier without a hyphen?) or St. Francis de Sales. It could be he was thinking of one of them, or a combination of more than one.

Maybe he just likes the name. I'm assuming (usually gets me in trouble) that he is free to choose any name he wants. It could have been Pope Polycarp.
