This much is certain: Women are becoming even more visible at the LDS Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City — at least in the building’s artwork.
Eleven new paintings of brave women from the Bible are on display on the west side of the plaza level, according to a news release on the LDS Church’s website.
The oil works come from the hand of Kathleen Peterson, who lives in the central Utah art hamlet of Spring City.
The colorful paintings portray the likes of Eve, Esther, Mary Magdalene, Deborah and Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Peterson also depicts nameless females from scriptural accounts, including the woman at the well and the widow’s mite.
"Painting is kind of a prayer or meditation for me," the artist said in the release. "I paint about integrity of life. It all has meaning to me, so hopefully it has meaning to those who see it, too."
And it means these courageous women from Holy Writ will enjoy a prominent place next month, when tens of thousands of Mormons stream through the building for General Conference.
Earlier this year, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also put up photos of top current LDS leaders in the Conference Center. That exhibit includes the presidencies of the Relief Society (for adult Mormon women), the Young Women’s organization (for girls between ages 12 and 17), and the Primary (for boys and girls between 18 months and 11 years old).
At the time, an LDS spokeswoman noted that "conversations about giving more visibility to women have been going on for some years."
