What was the 19th Century Christian understanding of when Christ was born?

Hi everyone.

My question is regarding nineteenth century Christian understanding of when Christ was born, and specifically, the Christian culture Joseph Smith lived in. I understand that Elder Talmage placed Christ's birth in 1 BCE, with Dr. Chadwick arguing for December 5 BCE.

Do I presume that nineteenth century American Christianity believed Christ was born in December 0 CE?

Second question (¯\_(ツ)_/¯): When do biblical scholars start to place Christ's birth around 5/4 BCE?

Thanks in advance and I would appreciate any directions to sources as well.

Miguel
