My first encounter with the people who are just MAD

You experienced the result of the unusual use of Godwin's Law commonly used on the board.

Basically, if you compare the church or its leaders or their behavior with anyone less than virtuous the thread gets shut down pretty quickly.

Boy, isn't that the truth!

It really was amazing; all I did was compare some whose religious experiences appeared to be genuine, just like the person I was debating with.

The fact that they were all cults I guess was the problem.

That is par for the course. At the aptly named MAD board, that is what 90% of the arguments from fundie Mormons towards the rest of the community there are about. They usually don't get deleted (unless it gives bad PR, like one dude telling me to go back to Africa once), and any logic on the part of the critics that points out the stupidity of the fundie Mormon posters gets deleted, the critics get threatened, their threads get shut down. If a fundie Mormon makes a thread that is controversial however, it gets moved to pundits where only people who have the passwords and handshakes to the clubhouse can enter.

*sigh*

I always wondered ... if I learn the passwords and handshakes from someone outside the temple ceremonies, can I still get into heaven?

As long as you know them, right?
