But surely Joseph Smith's behavior was frowned upon by the majority in his time period,

Sure, but that is not what I said.

and some were so offended that they wanted him dead.

Yes but this was not the whole or even majority of society.

The Saints were run out of Palmyra,

No they were not run out. They left NY for Ohio because of the large base of convert there as a result of Rogdon's conversion.

Kirtland,

I agree with that and it was mostly due to the KSS issues.

and Independence,

Joseph was not in Independence when the saints were driven out, and I lay almost all of THAT on the no LDS in Independence at the time. The saints added to the later Missouri hostilites though I see no justification in driving them from the state.

Joseph was finally killed in Nauvoo.

Yes by a MOB, which many papers and commentaries of the day condemned.

Joseph wasn't a popular guy because of polygamy, the Kirtland Bank, the block voting, the money digging, etc
.

As well as his succes and a religous leader and the competition ha gave to other religous leaders where he lived.

Presentism doesn't explain the hatred for Joseph during his lifetime. If anything, history has been kinder to Joseph Smith than his contemporaries were. Many non-mormons today believe that Joseph Smith was treated more harshly than he deserved.

And this is correct.

The states of Missouri and Illinois have officially apologized for the way the Mormons were treated.

As well they should have.

However, it's hard to find any non-mormons from the 1820s-40s who were sympathetic to Joseph Smith while he was alive.

Actually there are a number of accouts from Non LDS contempoaries that view Smith quite positively though they thought him a knave regarding his religion.
