Does that account for the high attrition rate of Joseph Smith's followers from 1830-1844.

Quite possibly so although I am not a history buff and have no idea what the people were thinking. However, if they honestly thought Joseph Smith was a liar and therefore shunned him, that would indeed explain their behavior in my opinion.

Sometimes I wonder how Joseph was able to put up with it all. He didn't, after all, deal with those people through a pseudonym (well, except for a few revelations in the Book of Commandments, but in general he wasn't hiding his identity from his congregation).

Understandably, we all have our biases. And I happen to hold Dan Peterson in very high regard.

The question was directed to Liz, not me. However, for your benefit, why should he not be held in high regard? Because he's an apologist?
I know the man personally, and I find him to be an affable, intelligent, and fair-minded human being. Why would I spit chips at him because my belief system is different? Not entirely different, as we do share a belief in the Book of Mormon, though mine is not as literal. When I was in an "anti" frame of mind several years ago on the net, we had some severe clashes, but I have since apologised for those personal attacks, because I realised I misjudged him. I keep asking myself, what is it that people really hate about Dan Peterson? Is it the man, or what he stands for? I think it's what he stands for - a firm and literal belief in Mormonism. Why is this so annoying to exmos and antis? Because YOU think you know the absolute truth? You are so certain you have Mormonism all worked out, don't you? I can trace perhaps one source of this anger:

3 But I, Nephi, have written what I have written, and I esteem it as of great worth, and especially unto my people. For I pray continually for them by day, and mine eyes water my pillow by night, because of them; and I cry unto my God in faith, and I know that he will hear my cry.
4 And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayers for the gain of my people. The "spirit of the devil" may not be the source of this anger, but I conjecture something evil is. You have seen the demeaning, derogatory, demonising of Dan Peterson, all because he's an "apologist for Mormonism". It's rage, Scratch. Why? Can you tell me? What on earth has Dan Peterson done except defend his religion?

All Dan needs is a striped suit and a prison number attached to his profile. The internet mobs beckon and figuratively (hopefully only that) bay for blood.

Keep the rage going. Build and contribute to the hatred. This is the same spirit which motivated those who murdered Joseph Smith. And I have no doubt that some of those who rage with anger at Dan Peterson, would have been willing participants in the Carthage mob. They will not see how filled with irrational hatred they are. You have seriously misjudged the man, and as you sow, so shall you reap. I believe that Dan is a man of God, so excuse my pathetic "emotional" bias. I trust in my feelings and intuition.

I'm not sure what you think this has to do with me getting (unfairly) banned.

It goes like this. If Dadof7 thinks you lied to the admins about the douchebag quote on RfM, then he will treat you as a liar. Liars are often shunned. You may have been unfairly banned, but people generally aren't objective around those they perceive as liars. Dadof7 may have jumped to the wrong conclusion (I say may because I'm sick of the liar debate). Even if he was wrong to judge you so, he will likely treat you according to his beliefs in that regard.

It may also be that he shuns people he feels are too antognastic to the church such as those who keep pointing to sore spots dealing with race in the church's past. I mean let's face it. I don't like to hang around people who keep pointing out my mistakes.

Thanks for clearing that up, ABman. What this shows is that the failing is entirely on Dadof7/DaddyMO/Nomos's shoulders. So my offer still stands: if he wants to recognize his foul-up and apologize, I will delete his dossier---something which would be totally unprecedented in the history of the blog.
