Private message system question

There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason when messages actually get sent to the intended party. They first go to an outbox..and I've had one sitting there a day and 1/2. So how does it work? Sorry if this is answered somewhere on this board.

They stay in the outbox until the intended party reads them, at which point they move into the sent box.

I don't think I'd have ever figured that out. It's a good system.
