I'm not so sure about then, but I know marital and dating relationships are still used very effectively by the Church to help control people. They use it to put people on missions, or even remain faithful at home.

I imagine most men probably simply had no chance of marriage until they reached at least 40 to 50 years of age. Even then, they probably only had hope if they were chosen to rise through the Church or outside corporate hierarchy and attain the fortune you'd need to make you master of the farm and have enough underlings to do all your work for you. The lives of the underclass were probably worse than than ever.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

I have read that 3% of the men - mostly in leadership positions were married to 20-30% of the women. I don’t imagine what it was like then - young women being assigned to older men was much different than what is going on in the fundamentalist communities today. Maybe a male won’t get multiple wives, but at least he has a chance at one if he remained faithful. Those that were not were run off ..

In reading Blood of the Prophets it was interesting that Both Lee and Haight were given new wives shortly after the Mountain Meadow murders. In general I suspect new wives were viewed as rewards to the faithful and having many wives added to your stature in the community

And they say polygamy had no rewards for women. Heck, they could be the prize for good behavior on the part of the men. Yeah, that's sure why I want to go to the CK. Uh huh.
