Apostate question

Post by _mocnarf »

In the last 50 years, who was the highest ranking Mormon to become an apostate?

I know there have been a number of SP that have become apostate, but have there been any 70's or GA's ?

Also, I have heard there are several GA's who have had children and/or grand children that have gone apostate. Can anyone confirm that?

There is, of course, a certain president of the church who had a grandson go rather publicly apostate.

George P Lee was a member of the 70, and was exed - back in the 80's i believe. I don't believe any other recent GA's have become apostates.

However, there's been lots of kids of GA's that have become apostates. Steve Benson comes to mind.

And I have a good friend whose dad's a GA. He's in the process of leaving, and 2 of his siblings have already left. (sorry, I'm not saying who his dad is).

A member of the Quorum of the Twelve was exed in the 1940s for practicing polygamy on the sly. I'm trying to remember his name. If nobody mentions it I'll look it up.

Well, then it sounds like it is pretty rare. And I guess you would expect that. Those that make it that high up have been tested alot. It's not an overnight promotion. It take many years of dedication.

Is is interesting that there are apostates from the GA's children, grand children, nices and nephews. Is it tougher to be a child of a Ga, more is expected of you and the pressure is just to much? Or, is it that they see more of the inner workings of the church and that leads them to question???

There are apostate children of all kinds of parents in the church. I'm sure my parents wouldn't have predicted that they'd have an apostate child as recently as a year ago. I'm not sure there are any more apostate GAs' children than other members' children, proportionally. In fact, if I had to predict anything, I'd predict that there would be fewer (not none, just fewer) because the GAs really drink the Cool-Aid, and would have raised their kids that way too.

I've known two GAs sons. One was a pretty good friend of mine my freshman year at BYU, and his dad was in the 70. The other was actually one of BKP's sons, whom I met at BYU as well. We were on friendly terms for a semester or so, having met in a class, but I wouldn't go so far as to say a "friendship" took hold, and we both moved on. He later stopped being a student and joined the BYU police force. For what it's worth, both gave me the impression of being pretty TBM.
