Could Joseph Actually Find Treasure By Looking at a Stone in

So far 92% of respondants don't think Joseph Smith's rock and hat trick worked to find buried treasure. I assume that means most TBMs here don't believe it either. Why is that? Is it because there is no evidence that his rock and hat trick worked? Since when did so called "evidence" matter when it comes to Joseph Smith and his claims? Do you really think science has discovered everything? Science is making new discoveries every day. Won't you feel stupid when tomorrow scientists announce that a specific rock matched up with a specific hat will allow a person to see buried treasure? Those who had a perfect faith in Joseph Smith and the things he did will be vindicated, and they will have a greater reward in heaven.

I asked this question over on the old FAIR board, and only one believer said that he thought Joseph Smith could see treasure in the peepstone. I think that is pretty inconsistent. The new apologia - you know, the one that has been forced to admit what Nibley once declared would be the death blow, that is the clear evidence Joseph Smith did engage in treasure digging - say that God "trained" Joseph Smith through treasure digging - but that would imply that he actually COULD see treasure, wouldn't it? Why would God train Joseph Smith with a method that just didn't work?

The feather incident is especially problematic because it clearly indicates Joseph Smith was willing to use props to engage in fraud.

Out of curiousity, do you believe that old ladies with crystal balls can actually see into the future?

Do you believe that throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder can ward off bad luck?

I'm just curious which folk magic and/or occultisms you draw the line at.

Dear Nosey Nellies,

I thought this was an anonymous poll. Silly me. I guess it is asking too much to vote in an internet poll without the unwashed masses badgering me to reveal my vote. Since everyone has nothing better to do but pry into the business of one of the Lord's anointed I'll "confess." I voted yes, and I am NOT ashamed. Go ahead, tar and feather me if you like. We Brethren of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believe in a little thing called loyalty, yea, even loyalty to those leaders and prophets of old.
