Who are the super paranoids with ET and JosFielding gone?

Post by _Dakotah »

ET and Jos Fielding Smith both preached so much paranoia as apostles it had the Birchers and the Straight Arrow types fed for years. Then they became head of the Church and pretty much shut up on all the political junk.

Now both have passed the scene. Who has taken their place? Who will tell us of the dangers of the commie hordes and the civil rights conspiracy and the ultimate horror of a deck of cards?

Who preaches the paranoia to that degree now and had the new boogieman become 'the yellow peril' (china) or is is some other closer threat we have to worry about?

I am your new boogie man to feed your paranoia. To simply be a Democrat in this day and age is to betray all the principles that this nation is founded upon and if LDS, to betray God Himself.

The chief arbiter of paranoia amongst the Brethren is Boyd K. Packer. His "boogiemen" are "gays and lesbians, feminists, and 'so-called' intellectuals." Still, I doubt that we will see the likes of JFS [?] or ETB (and by the way: you left out Mark E. Petersen) any time soon. GBH has been extraordinarily media-savvy, and the Church has wholeheartedly adopted his lead.

One of the real boogeymans of this generation is internet pornography. GBH has made great emphasis in the past several years on it's dangers. No doubt, it's a destroyer.

I think the even larger growing concern for LDS inc. is the information that can be accessed via the internet that destroys the faith of it's members of the church itself. I suppose that BKP leads the charge here by attempting cheap Jedi mind tricks (even though he is not a Jedi).

Here are some interesting questions:

1) What would be more damaging to the soul - internet porn or "anti Mormon" information?
2) What would be more damaging to the church (or my testimony of the church) - internet porn or "anti Mormon" information?

1) Depends on the person.
2) Depends on the person.

I personally know more people who've left the Church over a porn addiction than have left because of Anti-Mormon information.

Then they left the church for the "wrong" reasons.

I know a guy like that, actually. He left the church because it "wasn't working for him", and went off the deep end and screwed, smoked, and dranked everything he could find. But lots of mind games from his parents later and he's back in, at least for now. He never really understood just why the church isn't true, and instead set himself up for a rebel/prodigal son kind of story.

The real reason (IMHO) to leave the church is because it's not actually true, not because you are addicted to sex, or porn, or drinking, or whatever. If one leaves the church over these things and never figures out that the church was never true to begin with, all one is doing is set oneself up for a lifetime of guilt.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

If internet porn is a problem for someone they probably have more troubles than that. I don't find much of it a problem at all, just don't visit the sites. But then I am an artist and have worked with nudes in the studio and on location. The 'porn' aspect just doesn't appeal much to the artistic bent and is a waste of my time. Semi-gynecological studies are not what I want to see in the form, texture and lighting on the human body. If i wanted that I would have tone to medical school and become an OB/Gyn Dr or gone into business with Larry Flint or the like.

I was just wondering who was the new guy crying in the wilderness against threats to our mental/spiritual stability these days. Sure wish we would get another B.H. Roberts to counteract some of these guys. That mentality in the current climate could be very entertaining as well as informative.
