Varies by region. The mighty wiki says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence ... ted_States

The CDC reported in 2011 that, following an earlier increase in neonatal circumcision rates, rates decreased in the period 1999 to 2010. Citing three different data sources, most recent rates were 56.9% in 2008 (NHDS) 56.3% in 2008 (NIS), and 54.7% in 2010 (CDM).
The incidence of male non-therapeutic infant circumcision varies widely by region. The Western Region reported an incidence of 24.6% in 2009, while the North Central Region reported an incidence of 76.2%, while the overall incidence of circumcision in the United States stood at 54.5%, the lowest figure reported over the previous two decades. The Northeast Region reported an incidence of 67% and the Southern Region reported 55.7%.
There was also significant variation between rural and urban areas. Rural areas reported an incidence of circumcision of 66.9% while urban areas reported an incidence of 41.2%.

I suggest that you ask your wife if she would object to the removal of your daughter's clitoral hood?

That's a good point. I don't know if a clitorectomy is performed for anything other than ideological reasons, but if it had legitimate medical preventative reasons, support for it wouldn't surprise me. Regardless, cutting off any part of the body for religious purposes seems unethical to me.

No.

Ludwigm, the practice is so common in the U.S., when our daughter was born the hospital included a $300 charge for circumcision. We looked at that, and said, ummmm.....no.

I've told this story on the board, before.

Many years ago I was photographing something in the hospital nursery. While there, an ob/ gyn that I knew very well was circumcising a newborn that she had delivered. The very young boy was screaming at the top of his lungs in obvious pain at having his foreskin clamped and cut off.

Afterwards, I asked the doctor why she still does that, pointing out that there was no real medical reason for it.

She laughed and said "Hey, I have three kids to put through college."

Circumcision instruments.

Edit: (I keep adding to this) Circumcision is just as ethical as trimming a puppy's ears or lopping off it's tail. It's mutilation.

Here's how it's done:

What fun! Sometimes done with a topical anesthetic. Often done with no anesthetic at all.

A question concerning the picture on the top right - blue arrow!

Is this an illustration mistake?
The "nut" seems to be in the wrong place! (Should be much lower and to the left, no?)

by the way: Are these illustrations your work?

To be clear, I did not ask about a clitorectomy. The male equivalent of a clitorectomy would be to cut off of the glans penis.

I asked about the female equivalent of cutting off the male foreskin, that would be removal of the clitoral hood.

And I hope this gay guy doesn't have to teach you straight folks the basics of vulvar anatomy.

So I ask the question again:

Which of you would consent to the removal of your daughter's clitoral hood?

Very astute, Ceeboo! It does seem counterintuitive. Actually the illustration is correct. The "arm" is lifting the foreskin away from the glans so that the surgeon doesn't cut anything important.

No, this is someone else's illustration. I've never illustrated a circumcision. I've been typecast as an orthopedic illustrator. About 70% of my work is in orthopedics. About 50% of that is illustrations of shoulders.
