I would guess that, apart from Mormons, non-LDS scholars, and active anti-Mormons, there are very few people who know who Hyrum Smith was. It wouldn't surprise me that, in his day, he was known known more widely outside of the Church than he is today.
I would guess that if I were to randomly ask 100 non-Mormons who Hyrum Smith was, maybe one or two, and that's probably generous, would know. I would guess that as much as 50% of Mormons, internationally, wouldn't recognize his name.
Ted Bundy is probably a more famous Mormon, nationally and internationally.
