This feels extremely scandalous to me, but my scandal-dar is all over the place lately, or is this just typical of TSCC and I should just get on with it?

In theory, a pyramid scheme such as the LDS is highly profitable in the long term. The recruiters, who are self-funded (not to mention receiving funding from their hosts) draw more "clients" into the scheme, resulting, among other things, increased financial support. As in any pyramid scheme the money floats magically to the top of the pyramid, leaving the base of the pyramid (hopefully) growing, but not actually benefiting it in any quantifiable manner.
