Temple recommend givers have been specifically told not to ask questions about immigration status or stray from this list of temple recommend questions.

Which suggests more than an odd few are doing just that, asking members specifically about their immigration status. To generate a First Presidency letter it must be widespread. What does that tell us about the kind of men currently serving as Bishops in the USA?
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

It tells us that their conservative politics come before the welfare of their Church. It also reinforces the biblical dictum that you reap what you sow and that hatred is never a good thing.
