"Do what is right let the consequence follow." -- LDS Primary Hymn
Throughout American history, religious leaders (excluding Mormon leaders) have often acted with courage in the face of violence to condemn racism, slavery and to support civil rights. Currently, many courageous religious leaders, guided by a strong sense of morality and love of democracy are speaking out against Trump and his attempts to circumvent the Constitution (which unbelievably, is now under attack, not from the outside, but from our own government).
My hope is that religious communities and leadership will continue to show courage in the face of pressure and adversity, and stand for what is right. Maybe they can even inspire Mormon leadership to finally do the right thing and take a public stand against Trump.
Dan McClellan has decided to do what the Mormon Church will not do. Say what you will about Dan McClellan, but he clearly doesn't lack the courage of his convictions. It's worth watching:

They are silent for the simple reason that they crave it.
They have been yearning for such a day for centuries, when the churches can finally take their rightful place (as they see it) at the top of society. The epitome of this sentiment in Mormonism is in the form of the Benson/Skousen/Wilkinson triad that defines current Mormonism. They have left spirituality in the dust as they ache for the time when Jesus will return, and the main reason for Jesus' return is to install the Mormon hierarchy as the top dogs over the entire world. They see the current turmoil as a good thing. They have never been so happy.
in my opinion.

In my opinion, the LDS church leadership is trying to stay under the political radar until after Trump. Actually, quite a good move. I'm sure it has startled the LDS church leadership that so many church-going Mormons bought into the Trump and ultra right rhetoric. This played out during the COVID pandemic. The LDS church suspended in-person meetings, advised people to follow CDC precautions such as wearing masks and social distancing. (Actually, Trump did too, touting the COVID vaccines as the miracle created under his stewardship and prodding--at least until right wing radio realized that it needed to sow seeds of doubt about the legitimacy of elections, vaccines and other science, etc. Then he caught the wave of anti-vax sentiment.)
So, for the LDS church leadership, it is a matter of waiting a few more years, until Trump is done and then see if the LDS church can once again be seen as supreme in the eyes of its active members. This playing second banana cannot sit that well with that leadership. But, they're playing the long game, which pins its hopes that the Trump phenomena will not be continued.
