fake tin plates?

Maybe when Moroni said they were gold plates it was a mistranslation, kinda like how horses were really tapirs, and steel was actually wood. It stands to reason that when Moroni said gold he actually meant something else, like cardboard. Or, maybe when Joseph said they were gold plates it was just his opinion that they were gold.
