I just read Quinn's essay "On Being a Mormon Historian (and Its Aftermath)". It was a very well-written essay, and at the same time truly horrific to read. Quinn acted nobly at every turn, in my opinion, but Packer, Benson, and Peterson (especially Packer) held a grudge because of a talk Quinn gave that was critical of the 12's censorship of historians. Quinn had the support of Hunter and even Monson and Hinckley, but they seem to have let themselves get railroaded by the zealots. Hunter apparently doesn't like confrontation. That's a bummer, because Quinn got Hinckley's tacit permission to publish his study of post-Manifesto polygamy, but the three aforementioned zealots had his temple recommend revoked after the study's publication.
Among other things, Quinn quoted Elder Packer saying, "Truth is not uplifting; truth destroys." Elder Packer apparently also told Quinn's stake president to lie to him on one occasion. Other bishops and stake presidents were pushed to do the same to other LDS scholars during the church's "inquisition" against Dialogue and Sunstone contributors. I guess the ends justify the means when you're a zealot.
Speaking of obeying commandments to do unethical things, a few MADB members have implied that they would kill someone if the prophet told them to. Others have indicated they would at least seek the confirmation of the Holy Ghost (not that that's much of an improvement). Several (thank God for sanity!) have said that they would report it to authorities.

Yikes! And they call this board radical, among other things.

A while back I asked on MADB whether members would give their teenaged daughters to the prophet as secret polygamous wives. The only member who said "no" was Rollo Tomasi.
