I think it's an invasion of privacy, and would never do it even if I could.

I do recall, though, on FAIR, reading that they could take this step if they felt it necessary. I have never thought my PMs on FAIR were "strictly private", and if I wanted more privacy I'd ask the person to email. I do however respect the fact that even if you could read PMs, you wouldn't.

And maybe Shades has that ability here....I'm not familiar with the powers of an Administrator (A Sr. Mod). But the more Jr. Mods don't have the ability to access PMs (except their own of course).

But of course, Bond, let's not be too naïve, there are some people, known as "hackers", who can access anything. Accessing PMs is like walking in the park for them. I know this from an LDS friend who was a computer programmer and technician for the US Navy. So, strictly speaking, privacy on MBs and in particular PMs is something you have to take on trust.

23 sent, 20 received. Some nice.....some not so nice. I don't use it much admittedly.

I absolutely live for sending PMs. Since joining this board, I've sent many hundreds of them to just about everybody but you. (And you know who you are.)

Mostly, they concern the private sex lives of dissidents and critics. Sometimes, though, they detail birthmarks or other physical defects.

I have a full-time staff of fourteen who help me to make up and circulate vicious, defamatory rumors.

I'm so grateful for technology! These things were much, much harder before the days of the internet.

So, from those posting it looks like I am just being paranoid.

Unfortunately, the PMs I am now getting since posting this question assure me that my paranoia is justified.

Some PMs have brought me good friends on the net, that have lead to in-person friendships. It is good to be cautious but don't let this exclude you from life's joys.

I have had PMs from both Dr. Peterson and Mr. Scratch and I enjoyed getting them.

I get the occasional PM, but if there's this big PM underground rumor mill going on, I got left out. I think they require you to promise to prefer killing yourself rather than reveal what goes on in the PMs, and I've had my fill of that kind of thing, so no thanks. :-)

Runtu and I would email each other sometimes, and I've gotten a small number from The Dude and maybe a couple other folks, but it's like measured in number of PMs per month, rather than per day or even week.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

I get and make very few PMs. The most were between runtu and I and had to do with completely non-board related topics...

Absolutely not. The only PMs I've ever read have been the ones legitimately sent to me.

Access for them would be as easy as drinking water.

That's incorrect. The Administrator control panel has no options for accessing others' PMs.

Honest now, mods. Frankly, though I could be wrong, I find it difficult to believe that they don't sometimes peek into PMs.

Believe it. C'mon, Ray, this isn't MAD.
  • First, I have no way of reading PMs.
  • Second, if there is a way to read PMs, it involves hacking into the board software somehow, a skill WAAAAY beyond anything I can do.
  • Third, it's morally wrong to read private messages. Even if I could do it, I wouldn't on principle alone.
  • Fourth, moderating the board is time-taxing enough. I hardly have enough time to enjoy the board and converse on it as it is. I don't have the time to snoop into PMs.
  • Fifth, and last, I DON'T CARE what people say in PMs to each other. Again, this isn't MAD, and I'm not paranoid in the least about what people are saying behind the scenes. Knock yourselves out for all I care.
