Under the "Who is online" link (as opposed to the "Who is online" list) it also lists non-humans such as spam-bots and search engine indexers. Fortunately those aren't counted when it comes to the "Who is online" list and "most posters ever online" statistic.
When it says they're checking PMs, it means the bot tried to follow the "Private Messages" link at the top of the page.
