Turns out this sounds like religiously motivated pseudo-science akin to the dramatic search for Noah’s ark. https://www.sapiens.org/archaeology/tall-el-hammam/

Archeology conducted with the goal of confirming Bible stories is inherently untrustworthy.
Res Ipsa , Thankyou for sharing this article. I can see it's point though I was disappointed that it lacked any presentation of better interpretations of the site in question. I am not trying to defend the Sodom interpretation, your skepticism makes sense.
And I recognize that the Old Testament has a real world setting and think that finding evidence of locations, people and events that correspond to stories In the Old Testament is interesting and adds to our knowledge of that time period. I think it would be neat to find solid evidence of an event that was the basis of the S&G story.

My objection is the result oriented nature of some archaeology projects. It’s an open invitation to draw bad conclusions and even to fraud. Do the science with the attitude of discovering who the people were and what their life was like. If it fits an Old Testament story: cool. If it doesn’t: also cool.
