Dad of a Mormon wrote:One thing I find fascinating about the LDS church is that it very much seems to be engineered, where they are constantly redefining doctrine but yet still claiming to never back away from their history. Still, the recent statements from Hinckley are hard to imagine:

Question: "Is this the teaching of the church today, that God the Father was once a man like we are?"

Hinckley: "I don't know that we teach it. I don't know that we emphasize it. I haven't heard it discussed for a long time in public discourse. I don't know. I don't know all the circumstances under which that statement was made. I understand the philosophical background behind it. But I don't know a lot about it and I don't know that others know a lot about it."

Now, I tend to try to put the most positive spin concerning whether a person is lying or just mistaken, but with Hinckley, I don't know how this could be anything but a flat out lie. He KNEW that it was taught, because he even taught it himself. So what was his angle in making this statement? Why are they backing away from this very central part of Mormon theology, at least it seemed to be in the past?

You seemed to have read the critic site very well. Hinckley died a while ago and so, his statements are not that recent. I believe that you are quoting from the larry king interview...right? When you get to be Hinckley's age, I would love to see you answer the questions that are fired at you....you may also slip a little because you could not gather your thoughts very well. You can find that teaching in the gospel principles manual that the LDS are now studying. Nothing is hidden. Give a ninety year old something guy a break.

It was my understanding that Hinckley was advised not to give the interview. Why? Because for the reasons of this thread. Heaven forbid if the man slips up and misspeaks. People like you and Dad and many others on this forum will be writing about it for years to come. Such is the critic mind. Not fair...but...understandble.

Yes it is. I am glad you agree. Why do you think TSM is practically un-accessible to the press? I thought it was great the GBH was out and about hob nobbing with Mike Wallace and Larry King and the likes.

Mormons taught God was once a sinful man and have spent the last many years trying to distance themselves from that awful doctrine.

It is in the gospel principles manual. Hinckley didn't lie. However, when I see the pope give an interview like Hinckley did, you can chime in with your comments. Hinckley was an old man at the time of the interview and the questions were coming rather fast. He did a good job and came across like a nice old man. Give a ninety year old something man a break. May your mind be sharp as a tack when you get that age.

He didn't misspeak, he lied, period.

No amount of lying from the LDS leadership or its apologists will convince you they are actually lying. You'll always force yourself to rationalize some bogus excuse for them.

Why me, he said the same thing about this topic not once, but at least twice and perhaps more. And at least once it was not in TV but with a writer from Time. He has plenty of time to answer it.

Face it dude. He dodged the question. Even as a TBM I knew he dodged it. And I defended his dodging then.

And by the way if it is your wondrous understanding that he was advised not to do the interview (which one, he did dozens) where does this understanding come from?

Dad of a Mormon wrote:So since it is pretty clear that it was taught and accepted as doctrine, why are they backing away from it now?

From the Gospel Principles Manual:

The Nature of God

* •

What are some of God’s attributes?

Because we are made in His image (see Moses 2:26; 6:9), we know that our bodies are like His body. His eternal spirit is housed in a tangible body of flesh and bones (see D&C 130:22). God’s body, however, is perfected and glorified, with a glory beyond all description.

This was taught to members in priesthood and relief society last year.

Do you want to wade through the hooey? Better yet go here and read for yourself.http://www.fireark.org/wonders_of_eternity.pdf

I was proclaimed a prophet by three elders in good standing and two stake presidents (I doubt that the two SP realized fully what they were saying) before I said anything of the kind.

You would just back off and let a discussion dwindle anyways. Let me know if you have a question if you happen to read my PDF about the realities of exaltation and how God's eternal round differs from that of man's exaltation.

There were never any Mormons to match their mountains.
