I'm surprised that the denizens on this board really engage you like they do; you and Gazelem must be the only regulars who pass for TBMs on this board, and they have to talk to somebody. Do you have a real job? P

Perhaps you are right about me. Maybe I will even go out and get a real job.

Hi P...

Non-credentialed people can counsel all they want; otherwise ministers would be "unethical," cops would be unethical, school counselors would be unethical. Confidentiality rules do not apply to them (except in the penitential confession to a priest or minister).

Ummmm no. Ministers should not be counseling unless they are trained professional. School counselors have master's degrees in counseling and are board certified. Cops are not counselors and should not engage in such a thing.

Confidentiality rules do indeed apply to school counselors, law enforcement, and clergy. And common decency requires confidentiality regardless of the rules.

Now if you are talking about sharing ideas, giving opinions, helping as a friend or whatever fine. So long as someone doesn't pretend to be a counselor and is clear they are NOT a counselor then sharing ideas and chatting are fine.

But counselors are professional, nationally board certified, and typically members of the American Counseling Association which has very strict rules regarding ethics. I'm sure you can find the ethics guidelines online.

I think the self help movement has demonstrated that people who have experienced problems can help each other.

Plutarch wrote:Idiotic, yes. Non-ethical, yes. "Unethical?" There you go making up rules that don't exist. I have huge problems with your posts -- just making up rules of conduct which nowhere can be found. Where can I read these ethical rules? Do you read anything besides tripe on the internet? Can you use the jargon of an educated person?

You're flat wrong, Plutarch. Confidentiality rules apply to a myriad of professions, school counselors among them.

you write: "What would your suggestions be for children who have ADD? "

Well in my sons case, we through the playstation and the games in the garbage, and told him he was only allowed to watch cartoons on saturdays. And wouldent ya know it, he chilled out and his grades shot up.

Who would have thought parenting would have been the answer.

You said: "Gaz isn't feeling validated these days, so he lashes out in this manner."

Actually I am feeling sick and pissy, and therefore incapable of tact. And psycology is a hot button for me.

Why would a child with ADD need to chill out? I'm also wondering who delivered the diagnosis and what the diagnosis was.

Let me just say that my friend at work got his therapy through the church and its after the manner you've been stateing.

He says its done him alot of good, and he doesent have any kind of victim mentality, quite the opposite, hes more of a "take control of your life and overcome bad habits " mentality. Which sounds pretty good to me.

Also in regards to not being a licenced therapist, I think you could overcome that with a simple tagline that says your not a licenced practicioner.
