Pres. Monson is actually in line next, not Packer. Packer's currently 2nd in line. If GBH did step down, they'd also have to modify the standard mechanism for succession in order to make Packer the next First President.

Hinckley and Packer seem pretty different to me. I'm not sure they see eye to eye all the time on how to run things.

My inactive Mother always said that most active Mormons thought general conference weekend was a weekend off from church. Amazingly my parents who never went to Church listened to a good part of conference. My dad would rant about ETB and his wacko politics.

There's a thread over at MAD, and it was mentioned here in another thread, that there's a rumor that this general conference will be 'Historical'. DP posted this quote from russell nelson "while all conferences are historic," this one would be "historic with a capital H."

I remember as a TBM I'd always hear these rumors, and would get excited - what would the prophets of God be telling us? what new revelation will we get? And I'd always imagine something amazing that would help prove these guys actually communicate with god, and are at the head of his church.

but I was always kind of let down. it would usually be something like a new temple, or missionaries going to a new country, or the perpetual education fund, or something like that. never any new revelation. never anything to indicate that these guys speak with god.

Does anyone have an idea? anything earth-shattering this year? anyone heard anything? Alter Idem indicated that he had heard about something to do with the temple - care to share that here Alter?

I wonder if perhaps GBH will retire? That would certainly be historical. And, I think, it would make sense. The phenomenon of the last 40 or 60 years or so of LDS prophets being ancient by the time they finally die has caused some trouble before, and is certainly a topic of importance, where they would be wise to come up with some kind of solution. Taking the opportunity now to set a precedent for a prophet of very advanced age retiring and letting a new person take over, would be an important precedent to set, and it would be important for this to be set while GBH is still relatively healthy, of sound mind, etc. so as to avoid any conspiracy theories and shadows of the whole Ezra Taft Benson situation.

Hinckley will be pissing himself and losing control of his bowels two years from now, muttering incoherently into his applesauce about a stupid tree he planted when he was young. He will be doing this as Monson tells everyone that the prophet is in wonderful health but could not be at conference. Upon hearing his name mentioned he will try to stand up, eventually falling and breaking his hip for the third time that year.

His family, having been provided for and by the Trust fund, will contract home nurses that don't speak english and are never told who they are taking care of to keep him comfortable until the bowel obstruction caused by too much Morphine gets him septic.

Benson was a Classical Liberal who believed in limited government and individual liberty, quite unlike the uniform field of political hacks, opportunists, posers, and leftist power mongers who crowed the political field today.

How does commenting on ETB's politics translate to negativity regarding the restoration? The two are not linked. If you think they are, it's an example of your mingling the teachings of men with scripture.
