I can't figure this one out. I may be rusty on my internet protocols, but I thought IP tunneling was a way to establish a fairly secure connection between two servers or computers. Maybe they mean some sort of anonymizer that gets around the IP address blocks? Can one of our tech nerds (said with the utmost respect!) chime in on this one?

That's exactly what is being referred to. Anonymizer, and programs like it, mask your true IP address so that you can "tunnel" onto the desired site that is blocking you, which is, in this case, MAD.

Who's left to purge?

Ask him why he feels he needs an ip tunnel to visit this board.
It is just good common sense to use a proxy or tunnel whenever you are on the internet, no matter what website you're browsing. Especially when participating on a forum where the mods have an established track record of investigating posters and snooping "private" messages.
IP tunnels/proxies are also useful for those who have had their IP addresses blocked. (Raise your hands people!)

Cool - that's kinda what I was thinking, then. Now I can see how they would be able to block sites that provide anonymous browsing services (like anonymouse, for instance). The question then is, if you have software on your system that masks your IP address, is it possible for the MAD mods to block that? Seems to be a herculean task. Not that I need to worry about it - I've only been banned, not blocked. I can still read whenever I need to (although I surely miss the search function).

The software randomly changes the appearance of your IP address every time you log in. Theoretically, yes, they could block the IP address you used previously, but since the software changes the IP address the next time you log on, that person would literally have to sit at the computer the entire day, and do nothing but block new IP addresses as they appear. That person would literally have to have no life.
Hmmm...maybe it's more of a possibility than I originally thought...LOL

Thanks for explaining that. I was wondering what that was. Sounds kind of like what my son and his friend were doing with their website (jasonfoura.com). They put a link to a proxy server on the site so they could bypass school filters. He's evil, isn't he?

Most parents don't. My kids hate me because I actually DO know about computers. I've disabled my younger daughter's computer before when she's been talking on the Internet with her friends instead of doing homework. LOL

My son is Mr. Junior Hacker. He's managed to get around everything we've ever set up. So we just the computer out in an open area, and he's kind of limited. He's not doing porn, mind you, just messing around with gaming crap, music downloads, and stuff like like that.
And by the way, I am totally offended by your signature. I'm the one who quote Obi-Wan (way back on March 19). Sheesh. LOL
