Woudl I be a religious bigot if I did not vote for David Duke?

David Duke has issues outside of religion. This is more of a poor comparison then the JFK comparison.

The attempted comarrison by the way romney and kennedy just does not work. Catholicism and Mormonism are two different coins, not different sides of said coin.

It certianly does.

Catholicism is respectable whereas Mormonism is a kooky NRM.

In you opinion. Many think and thought that Catholicism is and was kooky.

Hypothetical: Kennedy is asked by a reporter a question of catholic principals. In response to this qustion he states "catholics are just like other chrstians in that (insert doctrine here)".

So being an old Christian religion makes it acceptable in your mind.

This is a small example of why I do not see the two cantidates in the same frame. Romney is actively playing the religious card.

Most so these days.

The american public do not like Mormons and for good reason.

No, nost the public thinks Mormons are quite fine upstanding citizens which they are.

It is not bigoted to dislike a cantidate based on religion just as it is not bigoted to dislike Tom Cruise because he is a scientologist

Yes it is if that is the sole reason you dislike him and you are a religous bigot.

What if a most unlikely situation occured in which a fundamentalist muslim ran for president? Would you deny him a vote based solely on his religion?

Romneys religion was no different than a fundamentalist muslim faith. don't believe me? Read some sermons from Brigham Young sometime.

If I were concerned that his politics were goign to be influenced in sush a way by his religion that it would hurt the US I would not vote for him. Once again though you compare extremes and such is not the case with Romney or 31st century Mormonism.

I don't believe you and I know you are clearly wrong. I would grant you that 19th century Mormonism was radicla and extreme espectially under the domain of Brigham Young. But 21st centur Mormonism is not BYs Mormonism and resembles it not at all at least as far as the radical parts go.

Thus your strained comparison once again fails.

You're are absolutely correct that today's Mormonism is vastly different than Mormonism under Brigham Young, or Joseph Smith. It's even a lot different than Mormonism in the 50s and 60s. The Mormon church has evolved into a relatively benign, mainstream christian church, and I applaud all the forward progress the church has made in recent years. But it will take time for the church to move past it's strange past. Most people today STILL think Mormons practice polygamy. Of course some Mormons do still practice polygamy, but the general public still thinks mainstream LDS practice it. It's been over 100 years since the church stopped polygamy and people still think it's practiced. It takes a long time for something as weird as 19th century Mormonism to become mainstream. On top of that, Joseph Smith and Brigham Young's names and statues are scattered throughout Utah. It is still a church of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and their words will continue to come back to haunt modern LDS until the church is able to move past those two guys and focus solely on Jesus Christ. It will tak a long time for all of that to happen.
