Then why bother with a restoration or with a church organization at all?

To get the Priesthood so we can have the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Plus we need an organization to make preaching work well and sometimes it's best for the Holy Ghost to testify of what others are saying.

Bingo. It's like nailing jell-o to the wall.

The whole Holy Ghost thing is kinda needed.

What do you mean? You can only 'see' what doctrine is, if you have the HG? You can't tell other people what doctrine is? They have to have the HG to know what it is?
WK: "Joseph Smith asserted that the Book of Mormon peoples were the original inhabitants of the americas"
Will Schryver: "No, he didn’t." 3/19/08
Still waiting for Will to back this up...

How many truths can there be?

Can there be more than one truth?

Did the church restore untruths?

Yes. We're talking about God and angels and other worlds far beyond our own and the mind of an omniscient, omnipotent being and his will for us. Even if I did understand it all....do you think I could explain it?

I don't. I first met him on a Mormon-themed thread on another forum.

However, he just pinned down exactly what it takes for something to become doctrine.

They can claim whatever they want, but unless they can get every member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to agree with them it ain't doctrine. You know this already.

There you have it folks. If the prophet claims something and can get all 12 to agree, then it becomes doctrine.

That does raise some interesting doctrines, though.

For example, where does Egg-salad for Saturday Brunch fit into God's plan?

And does "Sister So-and-so's cookies were delightful" really have a place in the Gospel Essentials?

Yeah, these are the kinds of thoughts that keep me up at night.
I didn't define what did constitute doctrine, I defined what didn't constitute doctrine. I'm sorry if that confusion caused you to lose sleep.

What you get from living the commandments is to become so personally invested/identified in the church that it doesn't matter that you don't know what the doctrine is.

But I do know what it is.

You are very special, dear.
