Since Nibley is deceased, and was never formally accused of this, I think it's unfair of you to refer to him as a rapist. There is a lot of speculation about the accuracy of the book his daughter wrote concerning that issue.

Maybe he was guilty...maybe he wasn't. But in this country, we are innocent until proven guilty.

I really have a difficult time with people casually bashing Nibley based on his daughter's highly questionable accusations. The amount of instant credibility accorded to certain kinds of accusers in this country is almost completely irrational. Every time we recycle their unproven allegations, we are only feeding the beast. It is high time that uncritical acceptance of such claims end. Innocent parents' lives have been destroyed by such things. It is better in this case to reserve judgment and remain soberly quiet.

I have never made such an accusation against Nibley, nor have the courts proved anything. It certainly can destroy lives. But isn't exmo anger against Mormons partly because they are incessantly, and mercilessly accused of "wanting to sin"? How many exmo lives have been destroyed by unfair and unfounded accusations about nefarious "deeds in the dark"? (Don't blame me, wanting to sin was one of my motivations for leaving. But what about the innocent?)

This is the same argument apologists use to defend Joseph's secret polyandry.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

And I have never found the "tit for tat" argument to be the least bit convincing.

I don't see that. Maybe you can help me understand.

Nor do I (which is why I haven't made any accusations, and won't), but it explains much of the animosity towards Nibley/apologists.

Remember that it was Joseph Smith and his cohorts in polygamy who were fond of "digging up dirt" on innocent women until their reputations were as black as mud, and still are to this day in Mormon circles. Also, anyone heard of the name William Law?

Understanding a phenomenon doesn't require one to embrace it.

I am not clear on the connection between the sins of Joseph Smith and questionable accusations against Nibley. Was false memory prompted by irresponsible mental health workers an issue at that time?

False memory wasn't an issue at the time, and it isn't the issue I'm discussing.

The more I think about it the more compassion I have for Nibley and his dishonest apologetics. Pretty much he was forced to walk that road by himself and abandoned by the LDS apostles and prophets who acted cowardly and never helped him. Yes, it's the prophets and apostles that are to be blamed for being such whimps and not going on record to defend the Book of Abraham controversies. They really are a bunch of cowards! They don't defend the Book of Abraham controversies because they don't how and are afraid too many testimonies will be lost, perhaps their own. Cowards! You prophets and apostles are cowards!

I feel sorry for Nibley. He was let down by those who should have shouldered the responsibility.
