Spam buster & mod

Post by _asbestosman »

That reminds me, wasn't Smac also a spam buster? I guess that means that some of the spam busters may have been chosen to throw us off track after all. Or maybe Smac became a mod after showing what a super cool spam buster he is.

I think it odd that the spam buster identities are not kept secret even though mod identities are (and even then, it'd be cake to figure out who is who if you reeeeealy wanted to).

I have no idea who "Mr. Itchy" is. I saw your accusation against me on your blog (that I was behind something called "Mr. Itchy's blog" or some such). That's not correct. I have played no role in whatever this "Mr. Itchy" thing was.

I haven't been moderating very long (a few weeks is all). And I've only just been "outed," so I can't say whether Beastie's explanation is valid. But it seems like it would be.

Take a look at Mr. Scratch's comment. He's been ranting about me playing the part of a "Mr. Itchy," without a scintilla of evidence in support. He didn't even bother to ask me about it before posting his accusation on his blog.

Now, is that "Mr. Itchy" thing in any way related to my being a moderator? Nope. Yet Mr. Scratch has dragged it into this thread.

So it would seem that Beastie is probably correct. "Posters sometimes throw [being a moderator] back in your face when you're just participating in threads." Mr. Scratch has proved that more than amply.

Yes, I was asked to be a spambuster. But I never busted any spam (I never saw any spammed posts).

Spambusters would simply be removing spammed posts. That's all. Mods, however, have to make judgment calls about what sort of behavior is acceptable what what behavior is not.

Mods may also want to participate in threads as posters (not as mods), and Mr. Scratch has demonstrated why anonymity - which distinguishes a participant's actions as a moderator vs. as a regular joe - is necessary.

Thank you, Mr. Scratch!

P.S. I am curious as to whether Mr. Scratch is a moderator in this forum. He deleted several of my comments on his blog, so I am wondering if he has the capacity to do the same thing here.

Mod Note-No he isn't a mod....if he was he'd show up on the moderator page (not to mention his blog would be yellow). That said....he can moderate his blog, and any comments there in. Of course you could post any quams you have with his blog on the main board for discussion and he couldn't delete them there. The best he could do is defend them-Bond

Come now, Smac. How was I supposed to ask you if I'd been banned by your beloved FAIRboard? I will remove the Itchy stuff from your blog if you answer a very simple question for me:
---Who was Mr. Itchy? I think that you could pretty easily find out, since you arose to the status of Mod. After, it was someone among the FAIR moderating team who leaked private IP information. So, you answer the question, and I'll amend the blog. What say ye?

Now, is that "Mr. Itchy" thing in any way related to my being a moderator? Nope. Yet Mr. Scratch has dragged it into this thread.

Actually, as I've just pointed out, it *is* related to your being a mod, albeit in an admittedly tangential way. Further, last time I checked, it was *you* who began making accusation about just who was "obsessed" with "outing" people.

How? After all, Bond, Liz, and Shades manage to pull off the single identity thing pretty easily. Why is this so hard for the MAD moderating team? Please do enlighten me, Smac.

<sigh> This has been explained to you before, Smac. There is no censorship on the main forum. However, my blog is totally mine, and I am free to run it as I and my legion of minions see fit. If you would like to start your own blog, however, you are more than welcome to do so.

Oooh! Oooh! Pick me! I think I know how it may have happened. It's actually very simple. Mr. Itchy doesn't need to be a mod to figure out IP addresses. In fact, I think that I could do it without much difficulty. Actually, I suspect that Mr. Coffee has already done this. Furthermore, since Mr. Itchy controls his own blog, he may have gleaned your IP information from there--unless of course he posted it before you ever visited him. Still, there are ways.

If you really don't want your IP revealed, always surf through a proxy.

That's a rather strange request my brother Scratch. "Find out who it is, and I'll remove the accusation that it might be you." Smac has said that it wasn’t him. Unless you doubt his proclamation (which I certainly don’t), methinks you should remove it from your blog. The deal you propose is tantamount to a defendant having to find the real killer in a murder case in order to gain innocence. It might work for Matlock, but in real life… *shrugs*

I've always wondered why they have mystery mods...what is their explanation?

Are you talking about the PM with photo thing?

And FYI, getting my IP won't tell you much of anything. It shows up as being in a different state than I'm in.
