This lead plate was engraved by Reuben Hedlock as part of the printing of the book of Abraham in the Church’s newspaper the Times and Seasons. Joseph Smith worked on the translation off and on between the summer of 1835 and the spring of 1842. All five chapters of the book of Abraham, along with three illustrations (now known as facsimiles 1, 2, and 3), were published between March and May 1842.
The term woodcut is a misnomer as I just learned today. The lead plates are screwed into woodcuts as you can see in the enlarged photos, especially Facsimile No. 2:
Shulem, I request that on your website you outline your interpretation of the shape of the deleted snout. There is certainly a distinct form near the face, in the background, that seems unusual. Can you be more specific in demonstrating what you see?
