It does seem that the polygamy issue is a significant contributing factor to the disillusionment and resignation of a lot of members. It interests me that so many seem to find out the facts of the polygamy issue so long after being in the church.

Polygamy, in it's historical context always weighed heavily on my heart, as well as the future prospect of an eternity in heaven which seemed no better than a swanky Colorado City.

but I knew, deep down, that the church wasn't true.

Uh, you mean to say, you believed the church wasn't true.

I know something you don't know...

You must be male. Surely you should put yourself in the shoes of a righteous female whose loftiest goal (or so she is taught) is to spend eternities giving birth alongside with the other countless sister-wives needed in order to populate a planet to hold your "eternal increase."

Mormon males get a promise of eternal sex with countless women. This, I can understand.

Any goal-oriented female is going to raise her eyebrows with the notion of the everlasting covenant of sharing your husband's *penis with a harem. And then being stuck raising endless rugrats for HIS glory.

*Edited to add the legend that penis=attention

Here is what usually happens. Somebody in Church teaches something. He or she tells you that they "know" it is true. Somebody else will add their witness that they also know it is true. And sometimes, you are told that you can pray about it too and know for yourself. But that is loaded with the promise that your answer will be the same as their answer.

You are then placed in the position of either going along with their lead and having a comfortable position in the community, or coming to a different conclusion which entails not only the desturbing implication that these confident people are wrong, but also that you don't fit in with the tribe.

Psychologists have proven that human beings respond irratinally to confidence and emotional messages. If somebody says something with confidence and conviction, people are naturally inclined to believe it. This is why the advertising industry uses testimonials and plays to emotion and almost never plays to a level-headed evaluation of the facts. Because that is what people resond to.

People are suceptible to believing false things when they hear an earnest testimonial. That should be a red flag.

No one knows beforehand what the answer will be or if they will receive one.
I know of no such situational vacuum where this would occur. As Analytics elaborated quite nicely, there is always a lead-in as to what an answer would be, how it would be identified, etc.

Trinity, if you think you can either fool me, shame me, or cajole me with this Ed Deckeresque montage of dreary slanders, falsehoods, and cutesy feminist trash talk. your quite mistaken. The Church (the LDS church, in any case) teaches none of the things you have ascribed to it. If you can stop lying about the doctrines of the Church for a minute and calm down, I could tell you what the Church actually teaches about these matters.

Pure bluster Trinity. This kind of amateur psychologizing in an attempt to explain away uncomfortable possibilities looks like little more than positivist straw grasping in the face of something they have neither the intellectual tools to comprehend nor the experiential background upon which to base any analysis.

First of all, try saying that last sentence all in one breath. wow. Points for sheer incomprehensibility.

Second, who or what does "they" refer to? The only possible antecedent is "possibilities," in which case the sentence is nonsensical.

Sometimes these conversations are like falling into bizarro land, where someone who claims to "know" things which have perplexed the greatest minds humanity has ever produced accuses OTHER people of pride and hubris.

It's opposite day every day!!!

My dear Mr. Coggins,

I'm unfamiliar with Ed Decker' writings.

And I am quite calm and collected. Two of my ancestors, Almera and Delcena Johnson, were married to Joseph Smith. Polygamy and its practice is quite in my blood. I'm very familiar with what the church has taught on polygamy, both then and now. I do not lie. And neither do the journals and writings of the leaders who introduced polygamy to the church, or the adherents of the practice. They include the ideology of polygamy and the origins of polygamy as they patterned after God.

All of the writings point to eternal increase, eternal posterity, and mutiplying and replenishing. Sex. The more wives, the more sex, the more children. I can produce dozens of writings that allude to this. But I don't have to. I can just send you to D&C 132.

I will leave you with another ancestor's writings on the topic: "The first command was to 'multiply' and the Prophet taught us that dominion and power in the Great Future would be commensurate with the number of 'wives, children and friends' that we inherit here, and that our mission to the earth was to organize a nuclei of Heaven, to take with us, to the increase of which there would be no end."
