Funny story.

During the talk about Mary Elizabeth Rollins and the Book of Mormon the speaker (can't remember who) told the story about when she first met Joseph. He quoted her as saying "when he saw me he looked at me earnestly." TBM Mrs. Hagoth blurted, "and then he married her?..." We laughed and then I remembered, hey yeah he did marry her!

So I told her that he didn't marry her until after she was already married to another man who was out of town when an angel commanded him to marry her or be killed. Although I have told her about polyandry before this was the first time it seemed to sink in.

Is there any interest in starting a NewOrderMormon 2.0?

Thayne's deafening silence has led me to believe that he has zero enthusiasm for the project and most likely no intention of continuing it. It also shows us the potential hazard of having a one-man show. Even if Thayne decides to turn the crank again there is a good chance we would end up back here in limbo.

I know there were NOMs who said they would be willing to take the driver's wheel (I'm looking at you Corsair). I would certainly be glad to do what I can but I lack the technical skills to take the lead.

I have enjoyed some of the discussion here on MD but I continue to be reminded that there is a real need for a safe community for people too far into their faith transition for StayLDS but not ready to burn the house down, people who no longer believe but remain attached to the church for whatever reason and still need a supportive community.

If there is enough interest to move forward with a NOM2.0 I suspect it will begin much smaller than the old NOM was when it jumped out the window and it may need a lot of care and feeding for a while, but it would have a strong core of wonderful members and it would continue to be a place for the homeless to take shelter from the storm.

What do you think?

Iced tea. Clarification/distillation-.... I felt OK drinking it.... I am sorry that this 'wayward' behavior on my part may have permanently created a situation where you believe I can't be trusted to tell the truth as I know it. So be it.

So there you go. Clarification and distillation in regards to what might be perceived to have been either dishonest/untrustworthy. This process I think will be helpful moving forward.
...I will follow the same procedure with you as I am with Lemmie....

  Since you dragged my name into this, mg, may I point out that what you actually did was what you did with grindael recently; you picked out a piece of cwald's comments and grossly distorted the meaning, thereby bypassing the actual issue.

Cwald did NOT say the main reason he considers you dishonest was your Snapple drinking. He used that example to denote a dividing line between now and when he might have apologized to you!!

Maybe in my StayLDS days or before you bragged to everyone here that you were a temple recommend holding Mormon, and didn't realize ice tea was against the WoW.

This 'process' you call 'clarification and distillation' is helpful only in reinforcing your disingenuous approach.

Here is cwald's actual issue with you, completely different from your misquote above:
cwald wrote:Right. The problem is, I don't trust your opinion or take on things anymore. Sorry. Your record here does not merit me believing anything you just stated about GC. Your brand of Mental Gymnastics to justify the Mormon take on the world is deplorable in my opinion.

Your approach to the issues just feels way to disingenuous and very dishonest to me.

The NOM forum acted as a place where all of us "former believers with faithful spouses", wounded semi-believers, hopeful Christians, faithful agitators, and number of snarky malcontents could gather comfortably. We could at least know that we were not the only skeptics among the faithful. We knew that we were not the crazy person in our fractured relationship with the institutional LDS church. This is our desperate instantiation of a middle way and the most official acknowledgment we can expect is getting a suspicious letter grade deep in the bowels of the church office building.

Some years back I had to attend a large family reunion in SLC, it was my first interaction with that large a group of Mormons in decades. I read many threads on NOM beforehand, I found a lot of support and encouragement for how to go about it. When I got to the reunion, I found to my surprise, a pretty representative group of " "former believers with faithful spouses", wounded semi-believers, hopeful Christians, faithful agitators, and number of snarky malcontents," with only a minority of hard-core TBM!!

I appreciated NOM very much, and up until its disappearance I still dipped in now and then, I'm sad to see it go.

Of course.

Thayne's deafening silence has led me to believe that he has zero enthusiasm for the project and most likely no intention of continuing it. Hope he is alright and not suffering from a huge case of depression. That is the only explanation that makes sense.

I know there were NOMs who said they would be willing to take the driver's wheel (I'm looking at you Corsair). I would certainly be glad to do what I can but I lack the technical skills to take the lead.

You guys would be great. Someone needs to take a positive lead and perhaps even check if the host still has the NOM forum archived. We need people who in the words of Elder Holland, "know how to get things done". Achilles said he wants to help. Perhaps the three of you could be the triune NOMhead.

I have enjoyed some of the discussion here on MD but I continue to be reminded that there is a real need for a safe community for people too far into their faith transition for StayLDS but not ready to burn the house down, people who no longer believe but remain attached to the church for whatever reason and still need a supportive community.

Good point. There is no static Support Forum here. If there was, perhaps Shades could name it The Pre-Existence.

Great idea. All of this should have been discussed at NOM before the lights were turned off for the delinquent bill. Starting again sounds even more doable than starting in the first place since there is an instantaneous membership and we know what the old forum looked like. Then name NOM is not a proprietary thing with Mrs. LDSman is it?

I don't think there is any way to find out unless one of you has direct contact information for her. As far as a domain, it is probably available since Thayne allowed it to elapse.

I would hope that Mrs. LDSman would appreciate having her husband's legacy continue in some form, knowing how much good it has done, even if it strayed a little bit from the straight-and-narrow. If we were to start the ball rolling and she objected we could change the name from New Order Mormon to something else with the NOM acronym (Next Order Mormon, Network of Outcast Mormons, Not Only Mormon, New Optimism Mormons, Nasty Opinionated Mormons (oops, MD&D probably already owns that one), Non Obedient Mormon, Nuanced Objectivity Mormon, Now Outside-the-box Mormon...)

I am definitely in favor of starting NOM again.

So, I know we all have the same question, but is there any way to save the old threads, or are they gone forever?

It depends on Thayne and the hosting company. The old posts are probably still sitting on a server but since the hosting company is blocking access, I don't think they can be copied or transferred without Thayne's permission. Corsair called the hosting company but they (obviously) wouldn't talk to him.

Corsair and I have discussed creating a new site, but have a list of pros and cons. If only Thayne would step out and explain what's going on and offer to turn over the keys.

Or maybe he's hitting the pause button to shake out the snarky malcontents! Who really knows?

alas checking in here.

I am in favor of starting a new NOM forum. I have no idea of what is going on with Thayne. I really hate to see the archived threads disappear, but if he has not responded to attempts to contact him, then it sounds to me like he intends to let NOM die.

I do not have the computer skills to help start a new forum and right now I don't have time to help at all. My husband is laid up for four weeks and we are in the middle of moving houses.

But conference showed me that I am still NOM and not post Mormon. We were at our new house with no TV and coundnt listen to any of conference. With no NOM to go to and find what was happening, I felt kind of lost. Usually FMH does a running commentary also, and this conference they were spotty with covering it and there were very few comments. So, I was really missing NOM.

This thread feels like home.

Hi NOM people! :) A while back, I copied & printed off some posts from NOM, which I pull out pretty often, when I feel the need. Mostly SPG's quotes. Again, bummer about NOM. Maybe more can post here and change the tone here. I hope.

For anyone interested, I started a thread about conference (Sunday morning) in Celestial section so maybe nobody saw it. But someone moved it to this forum.
