The ordinances we perform ar ebetween ourselves and God. these include baptism, initiatory work, and endowment. A marriage covenant is different, it is between Husband, Wife and God.
Did I really need to explain this?
Families are NOT forever.

Actually, no, Gaz. Marriage is between 2 people under the direction of the state. It's secular, and always has been. After you've studied the history of marriage, come back and we'll have this conversation.
Scripture references
Purpose of Covenants: 2 Nephi chp.31
Line upon Line: 2 Nephi 28:30
Purpose of Christ: 2 Nephi 2:26-29, John 3:14-21
Clean to dwell with God: 3 Nephi 27:14-20
Marriage ordained of God: Gen. 2:18-25, D&C 132:14-22
Laws sanctify: D&C 93:11-28
Yes the temple is symbolic, the symbolism is there to help us understand the ordinances we have just taken a part of. We are all immortal, how we spend the rest of eternity depends a great deal on our diligence in obeying eternal laws while our memories of eternity have been dampened.
