Name of the LDS Church
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints seems to be an odd name when you consider it. Lets break it down.
"Church of Jesus Christ"---nothing wrong here. It's Jesus's church. Alright I buy it.
"Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"---something wrong here. The "of" suggests that the church belongs to the Saints rather than to Jesus. Isn't it Jesus's church? Shouldn't the name be "Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ"?
"Latter Day Saints"---The church is 150+ years old. How long does the Latter Days last? Perhaps it should be "Church of Remaining Saints of Jesus Christ". This designates that the Saints are the Remnant and it takes the pressure off the idea of being in the end times.
"Saints"---another problem. Saint suggests that someone is holy. Typically this has been a title for people who have earned it, rather than a whole group of people who follow the same doctrine. It's also usually used to label someone who is deceased. As there are obviously LDS who are still alive, shouldn't being called a saint be an insult to their mortality? I suggest the new name of "The Church of Remaining Alive Persons of Jesus Christ".

Die Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage.
On my mission I was often asked why the name had to be so long...and since my accent was so bad it often sounded like I was saying "The Cherry of Jesus Christ".
I think the Church of Jesus Christ should have sufficed. I doubt many people would have confused us with the church existing 2,000 years ago.
Then again, maybe the name should just be the Church of Joseph Smith. Makes much more sense to me.

That's what they make revelation for.

Hey Bond.. LOL!
Some time ago I was visiting the Smithsonian portrait musuem and found a few paintings of early church leaders and the captions said, for example, "Brigham Young, President of the Church of Latter Day Saints". In other words, they left out the "of Jesus Christ."
I was pretty concerned that the Smithsonian could mess up like that... but turns out, according to the LDS experts with whom I discussed the issue, that was the name of the church at the time the painting was commissioned. I can't remember when they added the "of Jesus Christ" but seems there have been some changes over the years.

It's my opinion that putting "Jesus Christ" into the title is an easy way to gain some legitimacy with Christians. Since its of Jesus it can't be all bad right?
My question is: can this extend to making other things more mainstream for LDS.
Imagine if you will: The Jesus Christ Brewery. "Alcohol: Jesus drank it"
or perhaps: The Jesus Christ Tobacco Corp: "Cigarettes: Another Reason for Jesus to visit the Nephites"
or maybe: The Jesus Christ Coffee Imporium: "Coffee: The Number #2 reason to visit MesoAmerica, after that whole saving of mankind thing"

Do you know where we could find out when that change was made, TD? It would be interesting to know if it was done in general conference, or just at the whim of the prophet at the time.

These were in Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's Top 10. I'm not sure why they were rejected ;)

If I thought anyone was actually interested in some actual facts, I could quite easily lay out the various forms the official name of the Church took until it reached its final form in 1838.
But this is clearly just an adolescent locker-room discussion, so I don't see any point, really.

Pahoran

Hey Pahoran,
To be serious:
I was wondering if you think it should be "Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ" rather than its current form in order to denote that it is Jesus's restored church?
It seems to be a syntax error in its current form.
