A few weeks ago I attended a lecture by a man who claimed he could channel various otherworldly spirits.
Now, this man is a very respected lawyer in the city, a very kind and brilliant man.
He spoke on information he received from two different sources... "Michael" (for those of you who are unfamiliar with this, many people are in contact with this group of spirits/other wordly beings, who are collectively known as Michael. There are many books written sharing information from this group). The speaker is also in communication with another group he calls "group seven". (I forget why he came up with this name). This group is more advanced than the "Michael" group.
So... after the discussion, during the q&a time, one lady, obviously a Christian, asked about channeling. A man in the audience responded that it is basically "revelation" as given in the Bible, whenever someone is speaking for God.
This got me thinking... is this not what Joseph Smith did.. how often do we hear the revelations (say in the D&C for example) say, "I" meaning Jesus Christ not Joseph Smith?
Basically, Joseph Smith channeled Christ just like many, many people channel other otherworldly beings.
So, why would one believe Joseph Smith and not others with similar experiences? Maybe lots of people have the ability to channel? Those who believe they are receiving messages from God/Jesus/Mary/whomever may all have this ability?
What do you think? :-)

I don't really believe in God's direct influence. Of the millions of galaxies he's watching over, why worry about events in a tiny corner?
I'm open to anything pretty much, but I'm skeptical until I see some real evidence. If so many people have the ability to channel, where are the video cameras showing miracles?
Where's science trying to put prove these guys wrong? If they can really channel and gain valuable insights they'd be on CNN analyzing serial killers and terrorists.

The difficulty is in distinguishing between people who believe they are channeling someone else (and aren't), and those who are (if at all).
It's possible Joseph Smith believed he was channeling Jesus Christ. It's less likely that he really was.
The road is beautiful, treacherous, and full of twists and turns.

It seems that these constructs are too elaborate for me. I think of this (in my definition) for Occam's Razor and wonder why the simplest answer would not be the correct answer?
Why would a god use these complex, difficult to believe, difficult to verify means of communicating with us? Why have these things happen on, what appears to me, the same level that my dreams occur? Something unexplainable except as the spontaneous firing of synapses causing certain thoughts to appear real to me.
I absolutely think that these things are possible -- but I think they are highly improbable. I guess if it's god, I'd like him to step up to the plate and stop using mediums to talk to humanity. It sounds way too much like a conman's game to me.

Ohhh also, just to be clear, I'm not a believer in other-worldly beings communicating with humans. I highly doubt there are any other-worldly beings at all, at least no humanlike spirits resembling advanced primates! :-)
I just think for those who believe Joseph Smith channeled Jesus, why not believe that others are channeling as well? What is the difference?
Personally I think it all comes from within us; our minds, DNA, and neurology etc., etc., etc. I think for believers in any sort of Godly revelation, one has to be open to the same experience of others who may disagree with one's interpretations or information.
I find the phenomeon quite interesting however. I've read quite a bit of channeled stuff over the years, from the Seth material channeled through Jane Robers, to Messages from Michael... one wonders what is going on inside ya know?
At this point I'm going with a neurological abberation?

Of course people can believe they're channeling or talking to the dead or whatever. One of the greatest and worst thinks about humans is that whatever goes on in their skulls is private. The question is, where is the external evidence? Internal is great, but so me a miracle!!
