They have a thread posted on the MAD board regarding this article. It's amazing some of the hoops people are jumping through to defend the Church. Charity is downing the lawyer who took the case.

Because the church is so guilty of allowing this happen...it has also had a boomerang effect as well...where a child goes into a bishop's office for being a normal kid and having to explain themselves....because kids are sexually curious and not having a way out because SOME not ALL
Mormon parents get freaked out...these kids start naming names and causing innocent people to be accused of being molesters when they are not....and since Bishop's are not trained in this type of counseling they can and do ask leading questions.....and the child who is probably being abused by someone else is never helped and the abuse continues...

Portland OR. Hmmm.. Wasn't there another lawsuit for almost the same thing, filed in Multnomah county a few years ago? Interesting that we're seeing the same county again.

And the church settled out of court, rather than comply with the judge's demand to see the financials. I wonder if they'll settle again (use millions in tithing money too), rather than comply, should this judge demand the same?

I assume the Chuch is being more vigilent to current potential abuse and will report such infractions more readily. Can anyone confirm if this assumption has any basis in reality?

I just wanted to mention a few things here...

When the article says that the BSA has tightened up on screening, that's a good thing however, it is no guarantee that a person has not commited a previous offense. What it means is they've not been found out.


Both BSA and GSUSA have rules and policies that determine the child:adult ratio that are consistent with typical state guidelines for recreational groupings of children and adults. For example, GSUSA Standards and Guidelines does not permit a troop leader to meet without a second adult no matter what. This is for the protection of children as well as adults who are subject to allegations of this kind.

I'm almost certain that the LDS Church, like other churches, has it's own set of applicable rules.

The problem here is that guidelines are only as good as the people who honor them and take them seriously. While the article does not spell out (unless I missed it) under what circumstances the incidents took place, it would not be out of the realm of possibility that the perpetrator was able to access the children alone at some point without another adult present. Transporting scouts comes immediately to mind.

The message here should be for parents to take a proactive stance regarding their childrens participation in any sort of group. It doesn't matter how experienced or fun or talented the scout leader may be. Parents need to be involved and get involved. They need to be present and accounted for in their child's life.

Still, there are sexual predators who are successful in their efforts.

charity's remark about the attorney makes me want to throw up. There is no support for the victim's in her words and she shows herself as a non-thinking, uncharitable, and discompassionate drone. She nauseates me.
