Mitt Romney/polygamy article

Post by _beastie »

This is just the beginning. While Mitt is certainly paving the way for members of other somewhat "controversial" religions to run for president (perhaps Tom Cruise will run next ;) - the going is going to be rough, in my opinion.

Look at this paragraph in particular:

Joseph Smith, who founded the Mormon church in 1830, quietly introduced polygamy. He believed it had roots in the Old Testament and was necessary to reach the highest salvation in heaven. Smith is believed to have had 33 wives.

I predict that articles like this will eventually read that "Smith is believed to have had 33 wives, some of whom already had living husbands"

Hi there, Beastie,

I am wandering if Governor Mitt Romney should probably hire some of the LDS Apologists of Polygamy to work for his Presidential Campaign. When some of the critics of Romney's Presidential Campagin, or the media start referring to Polygamy and how that it was a very bizarre practice, Governor Mitt Romney can just have some of the LDS Apologists out there defending the practice of Polygamy. These LDS Apologists os Poygamy will state that most of the women who were involved with Polygamy very likely received spiritual confirmation of its practice, and that they should enter into it, and these LDS Apologists will also start acusing those People who state that the practice Polygamy was mostly an abusive practice, that those People are defenders of dumb and Dead Mormon Women. Yeah, that should work for Governor Romney's Presidential Campaign.

LOL. I tihnk Mitt will want to keep the internet apologists as far away from his canpaign as possible. The apologists think polygamy was ordained by god. The last thing he needs is his supporters pulling out quotes from Helen Mar Kimball about how she was cool with polygamy and therefore that makes it all OK.

Yeah, I think that's a great idea, brackite. They can illustrate it more effectively by showing videotaped testimonies of the women involved in polygamy today in the FLDS. From what I've seen, they have equally strong testimonies of The Principle.

This is an interesting commentary from the article:

Nonetheless, the law of polygamy _ Smith's revelation that God authorized polygamy _ remains in Article 132 of the church's Doctrine and Covenants. In addition, Mormon widowers who remarry today believe they will live in eternity with their multiple wives

Ouch. I'd think the church would prefer the standard disclaimer, about the LDS church no longer practicing of or approving of polygamy.

i think it still does support it in a loose sense. When a woman re-marries, she must get permission from the previous husband to be sealed to the new husband. The man does NOT have to do so. This was an issue that came up for my own mother.

How many Mormons will dismiss that as anti Mormon?
