That's a funny story. I like the comment about how BY's use of the phrase "kiss my a**" was so far ahead of its time that it could serve apologetic purposes:

“According to my trusty OED, American ‘ass’ for British ‘arse’ is first used in 1860. The first attestation for ‘ass’ in a derogatory expression seems to be 1930….I don’t see ‘ass kissing’ until 1973.”

And this letter was dictated in 1854? This means, depending on how you look at it, Brigham was either 6, or 76, or nearly 120 years ahead of the times. Dude! That’s proof of prophecy right there. I hope to soon see this in all those “proofs that this is the true church” lists, right after the one about how Joseph Smith successfully prophesied the Civil War.

Now there's a prophet for ya. We ought to pay closer attention when a senile old Mormon leader mumbles nonsense during General Conference -- we could be witnessing the birth future slang.

LOL. That phrase surely was ahead of its time. It would be similar to Ezra Taft Benson calling the Pope a "Be-yotch".

I don't need to point out that Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Miller's Tale" contained a scene where a guy name Absolon is begging a woman to kiss him, and she sticks her ass out the window and he kisses it (apparently his eyes were closed). This was written when, in the 1300s? Certainly the notion of kissing someone's ass as a put-down was known many hundreds of years before BY's time. I think at issue only is whether or not this should have been spellt "ass" or "arse" during the time when BY wrote that letter. If the OED people, or any other word authorities, have the date when that first occurred in America as later than BY's letter, perhaps someone ought to send them a copy of this first draft of the letter. Who knows, BY's letter may become accepted as the earliest surviving writing containing this spelling. :-)

Yeah, I had completely forgotten about Chaucer's Tales, which I haven't read, let alone, thought about for a long time. Since university days. Perhaps him "birthing" it was a little far-fetched, but even the earliest surviving writing containing this spelling is clearly a sign he was a Prophet, no?

I would personally be glad to discuss anything that Brigham Young has offered the Church in the way of truth and understanding. First I would be forced to say that any true Mormon cannot be deceived by anyone if the follow the dictates of their own teachings. When Lehi received revelation from God he reveled what the Lord had told him to his family. However, the only one who believed Lehi was Nephi and why was that? Because Nephi verified what he had heard from his father from the Lord. Every truth is given by the mouth of two or more witnesses, but one of those witnesses must be the Holy Spirit of God, if not, then it is possible to be deceived.

1 John 2: 27 The anointing which you have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you. But the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie. And even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

D & C 6: 11 If thou wilt enquire thou shalt know mysteries which are great and marvelous. Therefore thou shalt exercise thy gift that thou mayest find out mysteries, that thou mayest bring many to the knowledge of the truth, yea, convince them of the error of thier ways.

St. John 8: 31 If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.
