I hope no one minds me starting a new thread. Assuming Joseph Smith was commanded to start the practice, WHY was the commandment given?
If I look at the ten commandments, they all have to do with worshipping God or preventing harm to others or oneself.

I have been told he was supposed to raise up a righteous seed. Anyway, it is hard to argue with an Angel brandishing either a flaming sword or a light sabre.

I have yet to hear any remotely decent reason for such a horrific practice being instituted by Joseph Smith.
I think most apologists are going with the, "we just don't know" theory these days. :-(
