A 'Historic' General Conference?

Post by _Who Knows »

There's a thread over at MAD, and it was mentioned here in another thread, that there's a rumor that this general conference will be 'Historical'. DP posted this quote from russell nelson "while all conferences are historic," this one would be "historic with a capital H."

I remember as a TBM I'd always hear these rumors, and would get excited - what would the prophets of God be telling us? what new revelation will we get? And i'd always imagine something amazing that would help prove these guys actually communicate with god, and are at the head of his church.

but i was always kind of let down. it would usually be something like a new temple, or missionaries going to a new country, or the perpetual education fund, or something like that. never any new revelation. never anything to indicate that these guys speak with god.

Does anyone have an idea? anything earth-shattering this year? anyone heard anything? Alter Idem indicated that he had heard about something to do with the temple - care to share that here Alter?

Didn't they say that about the last conference? You know, the one where nothing happened?

I heard they are going to finally confess that their Mormon religion is a scam, and that they are not and never were prophets of god.

They were inspired, you see, by Warren Jeffs' frank honesty, having confessed in jail that he has been a false prophet of the FLDS.

It does seem like they make this claim at every general conference. The only thing historical about it will be that it will be recorded and published in Ensigns and quoted from during the next six months until the next historical conference.

I think it's possibly related to China. I heard rumors last year that missionary work was opening up there.

My other guess would be a new temple.

Today's email from my sister, Molly:

"Good heavens what is all the hurry up about? I haven't even given thought to Easter Weekend. Just another weekend pretty much. Far more thrilling is this coming up weekend with General Conference happening."

But don't worry, she'll be perfectly thrilled with whatever the heck they come up with, no matter how trivial. Unless it's about actually celebrating Easter!

Hi Who knows, be prepared to be "let down" once again. I'm pretty sure the "historical" aspects are that the Tabernacle is being rededicated in one of the sessions. That's "historical" in that it will be a momentous occasion, but it's not going to be anything earth shattering.

The rumors do fly about at Conference time, don't they. I got a kick out of all the things people suggested. Does anyone really think garment wearing would be relegated to only Temple worship? I can't believe that anyone would think that would happen, but apparently, it was a real rumor that made the rounds in one of the stakes.

Anyway, the little tidbit I heard was not really that big of a deal, but would be interesting to the LDS who are familiar with it. I was talking to a Jordan River temple worker who told me that when they finish the Tabernacle restoration, they will start renovating the Salt Lake Temple. For those who know what I'm talking about, renovations will include doing away with the "live session". I think the Salt Lake temple was the last Temple to still do live sessions, so after this, it will be a thing of the past.

By the way, sorry that my moniker does not give away my sex--I'm very much a "she". :)
